Health & Wellness Corner

Allergy Action Plan!

In addition to pollens, dust mites can act as allergens. Here are a few steps to reduce allergens in your home:

  • Vacuuming regularly, however, some vacuums can stir up more allergens in the air and worsen your symptoms. Use a high quality vacuum and/or one with a HEPA filter can avoid this.
  • Dust mites also live in mattresses, pillows, sheets, and blankets. Mattresses and pillows can be replaced, and blankets can be washed frequently to cut down on allergens.
  • Also, make sure that the air filters are replaced regularly, as this is a common place for allergens to accumulate and eventually circulate throughout the system.
  • Dehumidifying the air will cut down on the growth of dust mites and molds; dehumidifiers can be purchased at most supermarkets.
  • If you have pets that go outside, brushing and bathing regularly will reduce the pollen buildup in their fur. Remember, every time you open and close your door you are letting in dust, dirt, and pollen. So dust, vacuum, and wash your linens regularly!

Recipe Corner

Pecan Shortbread with Chocolate Drizzle

  • 3/4 cup(s) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup(s) pecan flour , or 1/2 cup whole pecans, finely ground
  • 1/4 cup(s) sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
  • Large pinch of salt
  • 1 stick(s) unsalted butter, cold, cut into small cubes
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 8 pecan halves
  • 2 ounce(s) bittersweet chocolate, chopped and melted

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a large rimmed baking sheet. In a medium bowl, stir the all-purpose and pecan flours with the sugar, cinnamon and salt. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles fine cornmeal. Add the egg yolk and blend it in with a fork. Lightly knead the shortbread dough until it is smooth.
  2. Transfer the shortbread dough to the prepared baking sheet and flatten it into a 6-inch round. Refrigerate the dough until it is well chilled, about 20 minutes.
  3. Using the blunt side of a knife, score the dough into 8 wedges. Lightly press a pecan into the wide end of each wedge. Bake for about 35 minutes, until the shortbread is browned around the edge. While the shortbread is still warm, cut it into wedges with a serrated knife. Let the shortbread cool to room temperature, then drizzle with the chocolate and serve.

Maintenance Tip

People love their dishwashers, some people don’t even know what it’s like to not have a dishwasher!

When it’s working, we take them for granted; when it’s not, it seems like just a few dishes in the sink will take forever to hand wash. What a lot of people don’t know are a few of the things a dishwasher is and is not meant to do:

  1. A dishwasher is not meant to dispose of the food on our dishes. There is a screen in the bottom of the dishwasher that prevents food particles from going down the drain and clogging the plumbing. So when you run the dishwasher again the food that was dumped in there before now gets sprayed back onto the dishes. Rinse the food off of the dishes before putting them into the machine.
  2. The “dry” feature on a dishwasher doesn’t mean that as soon as the machine is opened the dishes will be dry. The dishwasher uses hot moisture inside to heat the dishes to make them dry FASTER but NOT be dry as soon as they come out of the machine.
  3. If there is water coming out of the dishwasher when it is RUNNING, turn off the machine and call maintenance. This is the safe thing to do, it may be nothing or it could be a leaking water line or door gasket.
  4. A dishwasher can NOT get rid of grease or oil on dishes.
  5. If it seems like the water never drains out of the dishwasher, call maintenance. Don’t try to fix it yourself and don’t just wait for the next time you run dishes.
  6. Run a little bleach through the dishwasher about once a month, this will keep the inside of the machine clean. And always use detergent made for use in dishwashers. Regular liquid dish soap is not formulated for use in dishwashers and will only make a huge mess!

Dishwashers are meant to make our lives in the kitchen a little easier, following these do’s and don’ts will make sure that your dishwasher stays running better and longer.
