10th Helping of Music to Your Mouth
November 16th-20th

In our 10th year, we’ve gone a bit nostalgic. Over the past 10 years, we’ve created more than just amazing food, drink and music – we’ve fostered a family of people that take Southern food and culture just as seriously as we do, and who understand that Southern fare is rooted in much, much more than just grits and sweet tea. (Although we love those both dearly). Through Music to Your Mouth, we bring together some of the biggest names in Southern food, drink and music -- and pick up some newcomers along the way – to explore old recipes, new traditions, and stories that make the South so special. We then wash it all down with libations from vintners, distillers and brewers who hone their craft and pair their punch with stories of discovery. Coastal Discovery Museum
September 21st-November 30th

This is a unique opportunity through the Coastal Discovery Museum to be on a 2-hour scientific research cruise to study acoustic communication between resident dolphins in the May River and their prey. Yes, fish use sounds to communicate too! While USCB researchers from Dr. Montie's Lab visually identify and record dolphin vocalizations, marine biologist Captain Amber Kuehn will share what we have learned about these fascinating cetaceans and their prey. This 2 hour exploration of Bluffton's May River is aboard research vessel SPARTINA and is offered in collaboration with the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 843-689-6767 ext. 223. Cost is $55 per person, for ages 10 and older only please.

Health & Fitness

“It’s the Holidays, everyone gains 10 pounds”. Not necessarily true!

Here are a few strategies to keep those pounds away:

Increase Your Fiber
Fiber is your holiday friend for fast fat loss. It slows stomach emptying, lessens your hunger hormone ghrelin, balances blood sugar, and reduces cravings. High-fiber foods include berries (especially raspberries), leafy greens, and nuts and seeds.

Know Thy Enemy
Abandoning all logic and diving into a holiday treat becomes far more difficult once you know your numbers. That little cup of eggnog packs almost 350 calories. Ditto for the stuffing. Pumpkin pie packs around 310 calories a slice — and that's before the whipped cream. Never mind the ensuing cravings and potential food intolerances: once you realize how easy it is to devour several thousand calories in one meal, you may reconsider what's allowed on your plate.

Plan Ahead
You've had a brutal week, only to arrive home craving fatty foods. Think ahead and don't become victim to sudden urges and persuasion. Have some pre-cooked chicken and chopped raw veggies in the fridge ready to go. If you've got a big party to go to, eat something beforehand so you don't arrive famished. A little preparation saves major regret.

Work It Out
Juggling shopping, preparing for your in-laws, and a multitude of other stresses holidays bring might make you feel like your exercise and fitness needs to go onto the back burner. Don't let that happen! Make your exercise a priority and re-arrange your schedule to make it easier for you to workout (warning: this might mean waking up a little earlier for some). Get a workout partner, or simply ask a friend to help you stay accountable. Burst training is my favorite, because high-intensity exercise provides an efficient, effective workout in less time than it takes to find a parking spot at the mall.

Maintenance Tip

Smoke detectors are our friend!

We all know the scenario, its 2am, you have to go work tomorrow, you haven’t been sleeping very well, and it happens…CHIRP! What was that? Some hypersonic bird that got caught in your apartment and decided that it has to destroy you with its piercing, high pitched call?...

No, it’s your smoke alarm! It’s really very easy to get the alarm to be quiet without pulling it down from the ceiling and stomping on it like you’re playing a life size game of “whack a mole”. Pulling your smoke alarm down from the ceiling and disconnecting it is not only dangerous if you do have a fire, it’s also against the terms of your lease. Please refer to the Smoke Detector Addendum; “Fire safety and prevention is taken very seriously at our community.

Violations of these policies by you can result in serious harm to you, your family, roommates, guests and neighbors including: death, life-long debilitating injuries, and/or loss of personal possessions. Failure to comply with any of the above policies related to the operation of the smoke detector may result in damages, civil penalties, attorney fees and termination of the rental contract. All you have to do is call the emergency maintenance line. A chirping smoke detector is considered and emergency. This is a life saving device and we will be there to make sure they are working properly.

While you are waiting for a service member, to quiet the detector, push the button on the alarm for a second or two and that sets it into silent mode. If you don’t want anyone in your apartment at this late hour, this is ok to do, but please remember to call the office in the morning to put in a work order. Also, During our filter changes our service team is also changing all the batteries in the smoke alarms to help prevent the middle of the night chirping.
