Around the Town Happenings

Harbour Town Lights

Dec 1, 2014 -
Thursday, Jan 1, 2015

Enjoy the lights! Stroll along the harbour and enjoy the illuminated seasonal figures, with the centerpiece of the display being a towering 30-foot Christmas tree. Harbour Town is the perfect place for families to be this holiday season, with live entertainment and activities. The official tree lighting will take place just prior to the Gregg Russell concert on Friday, November 28 at 7:30pm. Make a difference. While you're enjoying the holiday season, you can help Deep Well make a difference in someone else's life. Bring a canned good or two, or a new unwrapped child's toy, and drop them in the well by the Liberty Oak stage. Since 1973, the non-profit, volunteer-based Deep Well has been serving the basic needs of the less fortunate on Hilton Head Island. For more info contact The Sea Pines Resort Recreation Department at (843)842-1979.

Health & Wellness Corner

“Stay in shape during the holidays. Yes, it is possible!”

  1. Exercise wherever you can. You already know to take the stairs, park far away and so on to get more exercise. This holiday season, wear a pedometer as you're running around, and see how many steps you can accumulate. Use every opportunity to get in more movement, whether it's parking on the opposite side of where you need to be or chopping down your own Christmas tree.
  2. Make it a family affair. As you gather together with your family, plan active things to do. Walk around the neighborhood to look at holiday decorations. Play football before the big meal at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Plan contests with the kids to see who can run the farthest or who can do the most push-ups. Challenge everyone to a snow-shoveling contest, and then build a snow person out of the remains.
  3. Limit the alcohol. Not only is it full of sugar and empty calories, but can also lead you to overeating. Drink water as much as you can.
  4. Don’t eat your feelings. if the holidays bring you down, reach out to friends and family for a support system instead of turning to food. Ask for help and talk through your feelings.
  5. And remember - Delicious foods and desserts are available all year long, there is no reason why you have to overeat at holiday parties. Have a few bites, enjoy, and move on. No need to stuff yourself just because it is the holiday season.

Recipe Corner

Linguine with Burst
Tomatoes and Chiles

The key to this sauce is a creamy emulsion of the oil, cheese, and pasta water. Toss and stir—and stir and toss—adding liquid freely, until it comes together.

  • 12 ounces linguine
  • Kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon chopped drained oil-packed Calabrian chiles
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, plus more
  • 1 pound small tomatoes
  • 1 ounce Pecorino, finely grated (about 1/2 cup)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Breadcrumbs

Cook pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water, stirring occasionally, until al dente; drain, reserving 1 1/2 cups pasta cooking liquid.

Meanwhile, heat chiles and 3 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium heat until sizzling, about 2 minutes. Add tomatoes, increase heat to medium-high, and cook, turning tomatoes occasionally, until blistered in spots, about 3 minutes. Continue to cook, lightly crushing tomatoes, until beginning to break down, about 3 minutes.

Add pasta, 1 cup pasta cooking liquid, and 1/4 cup Pecorino to skillet and cook, tossing and adding more liquid as needed, until sauce coats pasta, about 2 minutes.

Serve pasta seasoned with salt and pepper and topped with remaining Pecorino and reserved breadcrumbs.

Maintenance Tip

We are quickly approaching the time when we will trade our ice cold sweet tea for hot chocolate which means that we are coming up on the HEATING SEASON! We also know that with rising energy costs, we need to do everything that we can to keep our heating costs low. Here are a few tips to help with that:

  1. It is COMPLETELY NORMAL to smell something burning the first time you turn on your heater, for a few minutes anyway. If after about 20 minutes you still smell it, call the office and we will send a maintenance technician to take a look at it.
  2. If you notice your thermostat has “AUX” on it after your heater has been on for 10 or 15 minutes, call the office to have maintenance come out and check it.
  3. The maintenance department does preventative maintenance in every apartment, we change the filter, clean the a/c coils, and check the appliances. However, if at any time you would like to have your filter changed, just call the office and maintenance will be more than happy to come out and change it for you.
  4. Palmetto Electric Cooperative recommends keeping your thermostat at 68 degrees during the winter to keep your bill low.
  5. Keep your bedroom and bathroom doors open to let the air circulate and keep you warmer.
  6. In the winter time, your ceiling fans should turn clockwise on the lowest speed to draw cooler air up to mix with the lighter warm air to make it easier to keep your apartment warm and make your unit work less.

Following these tips will help you to stay warmer with fewer maintenance calls and for less money in energy costs!
