If you live in an apartment in Ridgeland, SC you need to head over to the Hunting Island Sand Sculpture Contest which will be held on the North beach at Hunting Island State Park in front of the Lighthouse on July 27th. Last year, there were around 115 participants and 100 spectators.
Come One, Come All! Last year the judges awarded ribbons for first and second place in each category as well as Certificates for 1st and 2nd as well as coloring books for the kids. Best In Show received a $25.00 gift certificate to Boondocks Restaurant. Each contestant received a button with the Great Sand Sculpture Contest logo.
Sand Sculpture Building Contest
Prizes awarded in each of several age and group categories. Build sand sculptures or watch while you listen to the Heritage Steel Band playing Beach Music live.
Time: 1:00 PM — 4:00 PM
Noon/Register at the Beach 3:30/Award presentations
Tools Permitted: Hand and sculpting tools including: buckets, shovels, sand scoops, carving tools, putty knives, spray bottles for water, kitchen utensils, scrapers, strainers rakes, etc.
Materials: Use only natural materials found on or near the beach. Decorations such as shells, reeds, and small rocks may be used. No artificial decorations or materials are permitted (exception: category #5 below).
- Sand Fleas (up to 8 years old — Must have an adult as a leader)
- Sand Hoppers (ages 9 —15)
- Sand Tribes (families)
- Sand Shapers (adult or small team of adults)
Judging: Based on Originality, Composition and Technique
