Even if your mortgage itself is paid off by the time you enter retirement, you'll still have property taxes to contend with. And those have a tendency to rise over time, even during periods when home values don't follow suit.

There's also maintenance and repairs to think about, and that's where a lot of retirees who own homes get into trouble. The average homeowner spends 1% to 4% of his or her home's value on standard annual upkeep. Now being a retiree doesn't automatically mean you'll own an aging home. But if yours is on the older side, you should plan on hitting the top end of that range, which could really eat into your limited budget.

Furthermore, while that 1% to 4% range applies to regular maintenance, it doesn't include major repairs that could spring up on you without notice. I'm talking about things like your heating system going kaput or a pipe bursting in your basement -- expenses that could really hurt you financially when your income doesn't allow for too many surprises.

And there lies the danger of owning a home in retirement: You just don't know what to expect. And while renting certainly isn't without risk -- you could see your rent go up from year to year or find yourself suddenly on the hunt for a new home when your landlord unexpectedly decides to sell -- when you rent, you lock yourself into a fixed cost for the duration of your lease. Sign a series of long-term, affordable leases, and you eliminate much of the worry that comes with owning.

Ultimately, the decision to own a home during retirement boils down to how much risk you're willing to take on. If you love your home, adore your neighborhood, and don't want to deal with the hassle and uncertainly of renting, then by all means, stay in your home. Just make sure you have a decent chunk of savings -- both emergency and otherwise -- to protect yourself from the various unknowns involved.

Since 2000, Bluffton’s population has grown from just under 3,000 to just over 15,000. What’s up in this moss-draped village on the beautiful May River? Locals will tell you it’s the appeal of the “Bluffton State of Mind.”

It’s a young and vibrant community (average age is 34), and people are attracted by the culture, arts vibe, proximity to beaches, and small-town way of life coupled with fabulous restaurants, shopping, outdoor activities, and other amenities usually not found in a town this size.

In some ways, Bluffton is to South Carolina what Austin is to Texas: “a little funky and quirky, laid-back, and dedicated to staying that way.” Locals tool around the historic district in golf carts, rather than SUVs.

Iconic Church on the River

At the end of Calhoun Street, on a bluff overlooking the May River, sits one of the most beautiful churches in the South. Church of the Cross has been a congregation since the 1700s. Its historic wooden Gothic home with shutters and palmetto-shaped detailing was built in 1854. Inside, the sanctuary glows with delicate pink, from the plaster walls and rose-colored windowpanes, which were imported from England.

Bluffton General Store is the newest charming hot spot for fresh cut flowers daily, gifts, one-of-a kind original art, and home décor. Jacob Preston Pottery is a fixture downtown and well-known as Bluffton’s Tallest Potter. He still leaves the door unlocked and works on the honor system when he heads out of town. In 20+ years of doing so, he has never had a single item taken.

Snoozing

The bucket-list stop for lodging would be the Montage Palmetto Bluff. With the recent addition of their new inn modeled after the home that formerly sat on the property, it’ a magical place, complete with gas street lights.

Dining

Among dining picks are The Cottage for decadent desserts plus “tomato pie to die for and salads the size of a football field”; Ted Huffman’s Bluffton BBQ; the upscale Bluffton Room with its rooftop bar and open air bar that ties into The Promenade shopping area; and The Dispensary for live music and “the best burgers in town.”

The Bluffton Oyster Factory—fourth-generation owned—is the only one still operating in South Carolina. Part of a newly renovated Oyster Factory Park, the facility harvests May River oysters known for their sweetness. Bluffton hosts town-wide oyster roasts in the fall.

Abberly Chase, Ridgeland, SCSummertime is here, and it won't be long until the annual quintessentially Lowcountry celebration in downtown Beaufort begins: The Beaufort Water Festival.

The 63rd Beaufort Water Festival starts July 13 and continues through July 22., but some events are already getting started.If you live in an apartment in Ridgeland, SC, here is everything you need to know!

The main event starts with fireworks and Parris Island Marine Band for opening ceremonies July 13. All of the traditional Water Festival events return, plus a free Hometown Tuesday event instituted in 2017 after Hurricane Matthew.

Outside food, drinks and coolers aren’t allowed in the park during the Water Festival. And leave strollers at home during the Concert in the Park. Because of the large crowd, the strollers are a safety risk and get in the way of those moving around.

Blankets and chairs are a smart idea. To ensure a good seat, get in and set up near the stage early. The park is closed for an hour before the gates open, so set up before the gates close or soon after they open for the best seats.

Here are some other important things to know as the Water Festival approaches, including parking and ticket information and a full schedule.

Getting there
Most events are held at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in downtown off of Bay Street.

Parking is available at metered spots throughout downtown, including lots at the marina, Beaufort County Library and 500 Carteret St. Meter hours are from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

A free shuttle from the Beaufort County Government complex on Ribaut Road is available for several events, including opening ceremonies and the headlining Concert in the Park.

Those who don't want to brave the parking crunch have a new option. The city's new day dock opened in May and offers boaters a free place to tie up near the east end of Waterfront Park.

Tickets

Tickets for the nightly events are sold at the gate but also available online at www.bftwaterfestival.com for pickup at will call outside the main gate starting an hour before the event. Organizers encourage people to buy tickets in advance for the Concert in the Park, guaranteeing admission if the park is otherwise at capacity.

Children 5 and younger are free.

Blessing The Fleet is one Beaufort Water Fest tradition that has changed a lot over the years

When the Beaufort Water Festival's Blessing The Fleet event started 62 years ago it was primarily to bless the shrimp boats and to introduce the new commodore. Many local shrimp boats participated.

July 15

9 a.m.-5 p.m.: Arts and crafts market.
9 a.m.- 1 p.m. River rally.
11 a.m.- 3 p.m.: Children’s day. Games, activities, shows, bounce houses and prizes. Free admission.
Noon-4 p.m.: Shrimp boat tours.
6 p.m.-9 p.m.: Teen dance. Ages 13-17, ID required. Tickets are $10.

July 16

10 a.m.-7 p.m.: Arts and crafts market.
8 p.m.: Motown Monday. Admission is $15, gates open at 7 p.m. Free shuttle service from Beaufort County Government Center. Children 5 and under are free.

July 17

10 a.m.-7 p.m.: Arts and crafts market.
8 p.m.: Hometown Tuesday. Entertainment by Steel Rail Express. Free admission. Gates open at 7 p.m.

July 18

Offers a HarbourFest celebration featuring special patriotic selections performed by Shannon Tanner at 6:30 and 8 p.m. The fireworks display will begin right after dusk. Harbour Town

Will celebrate the fourth with a variety of festivities. Children’s activities, live music, food and beverage will be available as well as the fireworks display. The fireworks will begin about 9:15 (dusk) from a barge in Calibogue Sound. There is a $6.00 gate fee to enter the resort (unless you are a resident or guest staying on the resort) and a free shuttle service will be offered between Harbour Town and various parking lots in the Sea Pines Resort. seapines.com.

Skull Creek

Starting at 9:30 p.m., the fireworks will be launched from a barge in the Intracoastal Waterway/Skull Creek. Join Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, Skull Creek Dockside or the Skull Creek Boathouse for live, outside entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. Of course, food and beverage will be available at all three locations. No coolers, please. Please remember that town ordinances prohibit the launch or discharge of fireworks within town limits and specifically from the beach.

Homeowners in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., pay from 33% to 93% more for housing each month than do renters living in the same state, according to a new NerdWallet analysis.

But many homeowners reap benefits that you can't get from renting, such as financial security and stability, tax deductions and a vehicle for retirement savings. 

While renting can't offer those long-term financial benefits, it's cheaper to rent on a month-to-month basis, the analysis found. If you're wondering how to save money for a down payment, renting can help you build that nest egg — but in extremely expensive or competitive markets, renting might be better for the long haul.

To determine the monthly homeownership premium — the additional cost of owning instead of renting, expressed as a percentage — NerdWallet compared 2015 American Community Survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau for the median gross rent and median homeownership cost in each state and Washington, D.C. Median gross rent includes the costs of monthly rent and utilities for all kinds of rental properties, and median homeownership cost includes monthly mortgage payments, real estate taxes, insurance and utilities.

This comparison doesn't include the down payment required to buy a home, which is traditionally 20% of the home price for conventional mortgages, but is lower for FHA or VA loans.

Key takeaways

Owning is more expensive everywhere. Across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., it costs more each month to own a home than to rent. The median cost people pay nationwide to own a home is 54% more than the median cost to rent each month.

The smallest difference is still a third more to own. The state where the premium to own a home is lowest is Florida, where it costs a median of 33% more to own than to rent. The states with the next lowest premiums are Colorado (40%) and Arizona (41%).

In some states, the cost of owning far eclipses renting. In New Jersey, the state with the highest homeownership premium, the median monthly cost of owning is nearly double that of renting (93%). The next most expensive places to own are Rhode Island, where the median homeownership cost is 84% higher than renting, and Connecticut, where owners pay a median of 82% more than renters each month for housing.
